I really hate the rise of aesthetics over actual communities. I hate how '-core' doesn't mean anything anymore, it used to be a suffix for music... I really hate how much people try to microlabel themselves and fit into the smallest tiniest nichiest little boxes. I really don't see the appeal in 'clean core', or 'webcore', or 'scenecore'(?) or 'older brother core' or any other '-core' aesthetic. Maybe the aesthetic isn't 'old web', maybe it's not 'scene mcbling gothcore', maybe it's just fun... What's the point of all those labels, I'll never understand that. There's no community. With emo a part of the ''aesthetic'' is also finding other like minded people. Other people who like the same music, the same shows, the same look, the same stuff... With 'cleancore' or whatever all of that is lost, the only thing you have in common in that you both like the way dish soap looks... That's not community or any fun, in my opinion.
Often times with those '-core' things an already existing subcultures and groups lose meaning and are misunderstood completely... 'Gothcore' is just goth but without the community, fun and meaning. People start thinking that being goth or emo is just liking black which isn't even always true... I would like to say gentrified' but I don't think that's really the right word. People forget where these 'looks' come from and why they exist... it's ironic that aesthetics with the suffix '-core' tend to strip already existing communities of their core, the most impiortant things about them. It's all reeks of TikTok... I don't use the app at all (especially since my phone's too slow for it LOL) but I do notice that often people who use it do have that sort of microtrend-microlabel mentality. I mean it kind of supports that kind of thinking, that you have to fit into a very tight box that makes you feel like youre special and people will like you. In general I hate the social media follower and like model I myself can see myself being negatively impacted by it.
I joined neocities because it's fun and you can be whatever you want, and you're just you and you don't need to be a part of anything i fyou don't want to but I see some people trying to bring it here... It's a bit disappointing... Websites are not bound by anything yet you want to put others' websites into some box that they don't even want to be in.
But also I don't want people to think I hate them just cause they partake in aesthetics or anything like that... I mean it isn't really harming anyone, it's just something that I don't like. If you like cleancore or kawaiicore or anything like that that's cool. I don't care that much. But I would like you to think about what it means.
